Nicholas's work has been reviewed in the Fall
Church News Press, Ellipse Art Center: Photo 07 Review. Here's
what they have to say:
"Further dabbling in the Delta brings us to the
work of Nicholas Syracuse who grew up along route 1 in Virginia and
now splits his time between DC and New Orleans. Syracuse who has two
excellent images in this show; with my favorite being the color
photo " Gumballs and Crushed Chicklets U.S. 1 New Jersey. Here we
find a couple of untouched gumballs on the roadside, with a
multitude of other crushed confections in the blurry background. It
literally has an edgy feel to it. A sort of malevolent playfulness.
Gumballs being a something of a childhood pursuit, and the crushing
there of the adult passing cars offer some clear clues as to what
metaphoric message is. With the untouched gumballs literally the
focus of gumballs of the image, your almost forced to give it a
positive, survivor's spin to it. When you wear on their nerves, and
they want you to grow up, they tell you to go "play in traffic". The
image seems to be commenting about the playful pleasures of
childhood, and how we should cherish the few pieces that manage to
survive the process."

A note from the road from Nicholas...
"In the past when I set out on the road, I
generally would leave behind the east coast guided by the
magnetic pull towards the west. Over
time, I discovered I knew very little about the east and have
recently set out on a new project to explore and photograph along US
1. US 1 is the old east coast
highway running from the far northern town of Fort Kent Maine, 2209
miles to the island of Key West Florida. Currently I'm about midway
through the trip and have found US 1 to be
the most diverse and exciting roads I've ever encountered in
America. With the project I'm taking a departure from my previous
black and white road work to experiment and shoot exclusively in
color. Stay tuned for this new collection in the coming months."

Nicholas has received
confirmation that
Bobby Beausoleil will be collaborating with him on the American
Road project. Bobby will be incorporating the sounds Nicholas has
recorded on the road into a soundscape of original music that will
compliment and enhance the photographs. Check back frequently
for updates on this project.
Nicholas is also currently
featured in the Artist Profile section of the online magazine
Allzah.com.

I just returned back east from 8,000 miles of back-roads
and city traffic spanning America, in search of more memories and photographs
that I hope represent an essence of my discoveries. In the coming weeks I will
be in the darkroom printing new additions to the American Road gallery, and will also add a new gallery featuring selected photos of musicians I've had the pleasure in working with over the last couple months. This new Music and Media gallery will present work featuring Godhead, Boyd Rice, and Death in June's Douglas P. along with others.
Please check back into this site periodically to view up-dates in which I am very excited to have had the opportunity to experience and share with you.
